Making Charitable Distributions That Matter

Waireka Community Trust is a charitable trust registered under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957 and a registered charity under the Charities Act 2005. Our goal is to make charitable distributions that enhance the wellbeing of communities in Pahiatua, Eketāhuna, and Woodville.

Our history

The Waireka story began in August 1973, when a small group of locals met to explore establishing a rest home in Pahiatua. Their vision was to create a caring environment for the elderly, and through tireless fundraising, generous community donations, and bequests, the dream became reality. Waireka Rest Home opened its doors in 1982, initially welcoming eight residents and quickly growing to serve many more. The first Matron, Vina Holland, and a dedicated team set the standard for compassionate care.

Community involvement was at the heart of Waireka. Volunteers, known as Friends of Waireka, formed in 1983 and provided invaluable support—organizing outings, birthdays, and fundraising events. Their efforts helped furnish rooms and even fund two rooms in the Hospital Wing, which opened in 1999 to provide continuing care.

Despite strong community spirit, increasing compliance costs and financial pressures led to a difficult decision. In 2008, the home was sold to a larger operator, ensuring its continuity, and the proceeds—$2.5 million—were used to establish the Waireka Community Trust. The Trust’s purpose: to fund charitable initiatives that promote health and wellbeing across the Bush community (Woodville, Pahiatua, and Eketahuna).

The first grants were awarded in 2009. Since then, the Trust has distributed over $2 million to projects that strengthen community health, sport, and wellbeing. Today, with funds exceeding $5 million, the Trust continues to honour its roots by investing in initiatives that make a lasting difference.
